Uganda hasn't historically been known for higher-quality coffee, although nestled among the renowned coffee-producing countries in East Africa. However, this landscape is changing, and the team on the ground, Zukuka Bora, is one of the few outstanding initiators of raising the bar for Arabica coffee in Uganda. Founded by the NGO JENGA, Zukuka Bora is a team formed of local experts in agriculture, milling, processing, and exporting coffee.They work closely with the farming communities of the Bulaago village in the Buzabiti district, part of the greater Bugisu region bordering Mt. Elgon, where Uganda's primary source of valuable washed Arabica coffees comes from. The NGO JENGA has been working with the farmers of Bulaago since 2005 before launching Zukuka Bora. They saw this community's potential in the quality and commitment to their crop and have since supported them with the right tools, education, financing, and most importantly, the construction of local processing stations.

Zukuka Bora purchases the ripe coffee from 200 odd farming members in the area at a 20% premium to the market rate. On top of this, bonuses are distributed during non-harvest seasons and when farmers invest most of their personal finances into the care of their crops. Furthermore, the profits from coffee, such as this natural Bulaago lot, are reinvested into communities through education, health and clean water initiatives.

Canephora (aka Robusta) is the traditionally grown and sold indigenous coffee specie in Uganda. And demand for Ugandan Arabica coffee hasn't always been stable for the last couple of decades, given the lack of infrastructure and financial return to producers in the past. We're glad to see this change in recent years. The region meets the criteria for producing excellent coffee with volcanic soils, good rainfall, high altitudes, and farming communities that are proactive and willing to use coffee as a vehicle for better lives.
